Capitol Update from State Senator Toni Boucher

Public Hearings on Irene Response

Dear Friend,

As mentioned in my previous correspondence regarding the widespread power outage in our region, a series of hearing and public information meeting will take place with state and local officials along with utility company representatives. These meetings will provide an opportunity to receive public input on methods to improve response and implement better practices and procedures.

A comprehensive evaluation of the state response is needed to ensure that Connecticut is as well prepared for the inevitable next storm or natural disaster that will surely come our way.

The series of informational and public hearings on power outage response that are currently scheduled are listed below.

Monday, September 19, 2011, at 9:30 am
Legislative Office Building, Room 2C
300 Capitol Avenue
Hartford, CT
Officials from CL&P and other utilities will meet with members of the following groups:

  • The Energy and Technology Committee,
  • The Public Safety Committee,
  • The Planning and Development Committee,
  • The Labor and Public Employees Committee

Then the public weighs in ….

Additionally, two hearings have also been scheduled in Wilton and Westport with local legislators and representatives from CL&P, to give our residents an opportunity to air their concerns.

In addition, Governor Malloy recently appointed members to a STORM team, the State Team Organized for the Review and Management of Irene (S.T.O.R.M.) This group will review the performance of the state, as well as utilities and municipalities in preparing for and responding to Tropical Storm Irene.

The members of this team will include:

  • Joe McGee (Co-Chair): Vice President, Business Council of Fairfield County
  • Major General James Skiff (Co-Chair): U.S. Army, Retired
  • Peter Carozza: President, Uniformed Professional Fire Fighters
  • Terry Edelstein: President, Connecticut Community Providers Association
  • Lee Hoffman: Attorney, Pullman & Comley Environmental Law and Energy and Utility Matters
  • Scott Jackson: Mayor, Hamden
  • Robert McGrath: Former Fire Chief, Stamford
  • Cathy Osten: First Selectman, Sprague

I strongly encourage everyone affected by the storm to attend one or more of these meetings and look forward to seeing you there.
